VAT services

UK VAT Registration

We guide your business through the process of registering for VAT with HMRC, ensuring compliance with VAT rules. Whether you’re registering because your turnover exceeds the threshold or choosing to register voluntarily, we ensure the registration process is seamless and hassle-free.

Preparation & Submission of UK VAT Returns

Accurate VAT returns are essential for avoiding penalties. Our team prepares and submits your VAT returns on time, ensuring every detail is meticulously checked, and that you remain compliant with HMRC’s Making Tax Digital (MTD) requirements.

EU VAT Registration (OSS & IOSS)

For businesses selling goods and services across the EU, we provide comprehensive support with VAT registration under the One Stop Shop (OSS) and Import One Stop Shop (IOSS) schemes. These simplified registration systems ensure you comply with EU VAT regulations while streamlining your cross-border sales processes.

Preparation & Submission of OSS & IOSS Returns

We handle the preparation and submission of your OSS and IOSS returns, ensuring compliance with EU VAT rules for businesses selling goods or services to EU consumers. Our expert team helps you meet all deadlines and accurately account for VAT on cross-border sales.

Option to Tax Applications

If you’re considering opting to tax property transactions, we provide expert advice on whether this is the right decision for your business. Our team will handle the application process with HMRC, ensuring the option is exercised correctly to benefit your business’s VAT position.

EORI Number Applications

With Brexit now in effect, businesses need an Economic Operators Registration and Identification (EORI) number to trade goods with the EU. We simplify the EORI application process to ensure your business is set up for smooth import and export operations across borders.

VAT De-Registrations

If your business no longer needs to be VAT registered, we manage the VAT de-registration process with HMRC. We ensure all relevant paperwork is filed, and that your business remains compliant during the deregistration process.

Transfer of VAT Registration from Sole Trader to Limited Company

When transitioning from a sole trader to a limited company, we manage the transfer of your VAT registration, ensuring there are no disruptions to your business operations. Our team ensures a smooth transition and compliance with HMRC requirements.

Partial Exemption Calculations

For businesses that make both VAT-exempt and taxable supplies, partial exemption calculations are essential to determine how much VAT can be reclaimed. Our team ensures accurate calculations to maximise your VAT recovery and comply with HMRC’s guidelines.

VAT schemes

Accrual - Standard Scheme

The Accrual (Standard) VAT scheme is the most common method for VAT accounting, where VAT is accounted for on an invoice basis. This means VAT is due at the time of supply, regardless of when payment is actually received. Our team can guide you through the process of using this scheme, ensuring you are compliant while managing your cash flow effectively.

Cash Accounting Scheme

The Cash Accounting Scheme allows businesses to account for VAT based on the cash received and paid, rather than when invoices are issued. This scheme can be beneficial for businesses that face cash flow challenges, as it means VAT is only paid to HMRC when payments are actually received from customers. We can help you assess if this scheme is right for your business and ensure compliance with the rules.

Annual Accounting Scheme

The Annual Accounting Scheme is a simplified VAT scheme that allows businesses to submit one VAT return per year, with advance VAT payments made throughout the year based on estimated turnover. At the end of the year, the final VAT return is submitted, and any necessary adjustments are made. This scheme is ideal for businesses that prefer less frequent reporting and a more predictable cash flow. We help businesses evaluate whether this scheme suits their needs and manage the annual filing process.

Margin Scheme

The Margin Scheme is used by businesses that deal in second-hand goods, works of art, antiques, and collectibles. Under this scheme, VAT is only charged on the profit margin (the difference between the purchase and selling price), rather than on the total sale price. This can result in significant savings for businesses in these sectors. Our team can advise on eligibility, ensuring that your use of the Margin Scheme is compliant and optimised.

Flat Rate Scheme

The Flat Rate Scheme (FRS) is a simplified VAT accounting scheme, designed to reduce the administrative burden on small businesses. Instead of accounting for VAT on every sale and purchase, businesses pay a fixed percentage of their gross turnover (including VAT) to HMRC. This scheme can save time on bookkeeping and reduce VAT liabilities for certain types of businesses. Our team will assess whether this scheme is beneficial for your business and ensure you’re applying the correct flat rate, maximizing your savings and ensuring compliance.

VAT can be complex, but our expert team is here to guide you through every aspect, from registration to return submissions. Whether you need assistance with UK VAT registration, EU VAT schemes, or navigating partial exemption calculations, we offer tailored solutions to suit your business needs. We simplify the process, identify potential savings, and ensure your obligations are met, giving you the confidence to make informed decisions that protect and support your business’s growth.

Testimonials

Excellent for my accounting needs. Very accommodating and dogmatic when it comes to extra-curricular support and resolution. A special shout out to the VAT team as well for always going that extra mile!

Hackney Peddler

We have recently started working with Nordens and are very happy with the service. Maria in the VAT team in particular has been great, sorting current returns but also ironing out some bits that needed ironing out from before we joined Nordens.

James Watts

Maria and the VAT team turned our first VAT return around at the 11th hour with incredible speed and were very responsive throughout the process. I highly recommend!

FAQs

01

What is VAT and do I need to register for it?

VAT (Value Added Tax) is a tax on the sale of goods and services. Businesses must register for VAT if their taxable turnover exceeds the VAT threshold (currently £90,000), or if they choose to voluntarily register to reclaim VAT on purchases. Our team can guide you on whether VAT registration is necessary and help streamline the process.

02

How do I submit my VAT returns and stay compliant?

VAT returns must be submitted to HMRC monthly or quarterly or annually, depending on your VAT accounting period. Our team can help ensure that your returns are filed accurately and on time, reducing the risk of penalties. We offer full support for preparing and submitting VAT returns, as well as reviewing any potential areas of risk or savings.

03

What are the deadlines for submitting and paying VAT?

VAT returns and payments are generally due one month and seven days after the end of your VAT accounting period. For example, if your VAT quarter ends on 31 March, your return and payment must be completed by 7 May. Payments must be cleared by this date, so choose a payment method that allows sufficient time for processing. If the deadline falls on a weekend or holiday, ensure submissions and payments reach HMRC on the last working day before the deadline. Late submissions or payments may result in penalty points or fines under HMRC’s penalty system.

04

What is the process for de-registering from VAT?

If your business’s turnover falls below the VAT threshold (currently £88,000) or you have ceased trading, de-registration may be necessary. Our experts can guide you through the process, ensuring you comply with HMRC’s requirements and avoid any potential issues with reclaiming VAT on assets or stock.

05

How does VAT apply when trading internationally, and what is OSS & IOSS?

When trading across borders, VAT rules can be more complex. The One-Stop-Shop (OSS) and Import One-Stop-Shop (IOSS) are schemes that simplify VAT reporting for businesses selling goods and services within the EU. If you’re involved in cross-border trade, we can help ensure you’re registered for the correct VAT schemes and comply with international VAT regulations.

Whether you’re registering for VAT, navigating VAT schemes, or managing international VAT obligations, our experienced team offers expert guidance to help you take full advantage of available reliefs and minimise liabilities. With Nordens, you can confidently manage your VAT responsibilities and unlock opportunities for long-term success.
