Making Tax Digital for Income Tax: What Do You Need to Do?
Making Tax Digital is no longer a change that’s somewhere in the future. Some sole traders and landlords are already using it. Others will need to prepare for April 2027 or April 2028.
From April 2027, taxpayers with self-employment or property income exceeding £30,000 in the 2025/26 tax year will be required to use Making Tax Digital for Income Tax.
If you’ve been told you need to use MTD, or you’re unsure whether it applies to you, this session will help you understand what it means in practice and what to do next.
We’ll explain who needs to use MTD and when, how digital records and quarterly updates work, and what stays the same. We’ll also clear up a common misconception: quarterly updates are not quarterly tax bills.
What we will explore
- Who needs to use MTD for Income Tax, and when
- How qualifying income affects your start date
- What digital record-keeping and compatible software involve
- What quarterly updates include, and how they fit with your annual tax return
