Each new year bursts forth in a champagne-corked display of optimism and positivity. But by the time most people return to their desks after the holiday break, many resolutions have fallen by the wayside in a sorry pile along with the turkey trimmings and remains of broken cracker toys.
While we all have good intentions, it’s estimated that over 70% of people give up or forget their new year resolutions by the second week of January. So how can you stay on track? Here are a few simple tips to start your year heading in the right direction…
1. Set intentions rather than resolutions
Slightly different words but hugely different meanings… When we resolve to do something, we’re not flexible to change. If we don’t get there in the way we planned, it’s easy to say “I’ve failed” and lose interest. With an intention, we’re aiming towards a bigger picture so we can see an end result in a more realistic timeframe.
2. Start with one thing
Avoid making a huge list of all the things you want to change. It’s overwhelming and hard to change lots of things in one go. Instead, choose one thing to focus on. Keep it simple.
3. Give yourself seven days
If you have a specific habit you want to change, try to do whatever it is for seven days. It’s only seven days. Of course, you can carry on after the week is up, but there’s no pressure to do it long term. Making a smaller commitment like this is easier to achieve – and the satisfaction of a ‘quick win’ means you’re much more likely to keep going.
4. Do one thing you’ve been putting off
Human nature means we tend to put off things that we don’t want to do but should do, as it’s easier to push them aside than face them. Don’t put it off! Do it now… Get it out in the open, say what you need to say, do what you need to do… It will be a real weight lifted from your mind and you’ll be able to concentrate with a clear head on the positive things that you enjoy or want to achieve.
5. Do what YOU want to do
To make this the best year ever, here’s the best advice: Do what you want to do! Not what you think you should do. Not what everyone’s telling you to do. Stop, step back and really think about what you wish you could achieve. Imagine if you were to just dare to try… Do it now and you could change the course of your whole year.
